As engine compression ratios increase the old style starters did not have enough torque to turn over these engines. The gear reduction starters were introduced which allow the starter motor to turn faster and through a set of gears, reduce the speed and therefore increase the output torque to turn and start the engine.
The short answer is no, the 6 volt starters will work on 12 volts and always turn the correct direction with positive or negative grounds. Older vehicles with original starters are wearing out and unlike the past, there are no longer starter repair shops in every town and parts for old starters are getting very hard to source. Vintage Auto Garage builds new 12 volt gear HiTorque reduction starters for most all American Classics. These new starters have built in solenoids, simple to install, will start hot or cold engines instantly and only weigh 8.5 pounds.. compared to the old 22 pound starters.
Vintage Auto Garage builds all starters in our own facility and in most cases has figured out the various starter applications. Specific starter fitment is located within the description and in the starter application guide. Also we can provide assistance to figure out the correct starter for the engine application.
